Materials
Titanium alloys (Grade 2, Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V) and cobalt-chrome are the materials most orthopedic implant prototypes call for — both available in CNC-machined and metal 3D printed (DMLS/SLM) form.
Process route
3, 4 and 5-axis CNC machining handles precise bearing surfaces and geometry; DMLS/SLM metal 3D printing handles porous or lattice structures that machining alone can't produce economically at prototype quantities.
Finishing
Passivation, electropolishing, bead blasting and PVD/DLC coating are available to take a machined or printed implant prototype to its final surface condition.
