Every medical device manufacturing RFQ eventually runs into the same question: is this part still a one-off, or has it become a small-batch program that changes the right manufacturing route? The answer affects material, tooling and lead time, so it is worth deciding deliberately instead of defaulting to whatever process built the last revision.
What actually changes between one-off and batch work
Lab Ready's medical device manufacturing workflow has no minimum order quantity, so a single validation part and a repeat batch move through the same intake process. What changes is the process recommendation. A one-off geometry study is usually served well by plastic or metal 3D printing, because neither requires tooling and both can absorb a design change on the next revision. Once geometry is stable and the program needs repeatable parts in production-representative material, machining or molding become the more efficient route.
Why printing is the default for early quantities
Metal 3D printing is listed specifically for low quantities because DMLS and SLM avoid a tooling investment on geometry that may still change, while reaching porous, lattice and internal features that machining alone struggles to produce economically. That advantage narrows once a design is production-representative: at that point, the better question is whether CNC machining can carry the part alone, or whether the plastic components in the assembly justify committing to a mold.
Bridge tooling as the step in between
For plastic components, that decision has its own dedicated comparison — bridge tooling versus production tooling — because bridge tooling exists for programs that have outgrown printing but are not ready to commit to a full production tool. The same principle applies across every process: commit to tooling once the design is stable enough that the tool's lifespan will actually be used, not before. Quantity alone does not make that call; design stability and program stage do.
If the expected quantity is still a range rather than a fixed number, say so in the RFQ instead of picking a process alone. The RFQ checklist specifically asks for the immediate quantity and any likely follow-on quantities, because that follow-on number is what actually separates a one-off manufacturing route from a batch-production one.
