Injection molding enters a device program at two very different points, and confusing them is a common way a prototype budget or timeline gets thrown off. Bridge tooling and production tooling both make injection-molded parts — but they're built for different jobs.

Bridge tooling: parts now, not perfection

Bridge tooling — sometimes called soft or prototype tooling — is built fast, in a lower-cost tool material, to produce a limited run of production-representative plastic parts while a hard production tool is still being designed or built. It exists to close the gap between “we have a design” and “we have real parts to test,” without waiting the months a full production tool usually takes.

Production tooling: built for volume and tool life

Production tooling is hardened, built to hold tolerance and surface finish across tens or hundreds of thousands of cycles, and priced and scheduled accordingly. It's the right investment once a design is validated and the volume is real — not before.

Where overmolding fits

Making the switch at the right time

The failure mode Lab Ready sees most often isn't picking the wrong tooling type — it's committing to production tooling before a design is stable enough to justify it, or staying on bridge tooling long enough that per-part cost stops making sense. Coordinating bridge and production molding alongside machining and additive manufacturing means a device program isn't forced onto one process as it moves from prototype to production.
